Severe Weather

I. Cause of severe weather

    A. Air masses

          1. Covers thousands of square kilometers of land & water

          2. Can be: cold, warm, dry, or moist

          3. Formed above warm area of water

                     a. Air is warm & humid

          4.   Formed above cold area of land

                    a. Air is cold & dry

    B. Fronts

          1. Air mass moved

                   a. Changes in weather

                      (1) 1 Air meets different mass

                   b. Cold & dry air mass runs to warm & moist air   mass

                      (1) Cold air moves under & pushes warm air up

                      (2) Towering clouds form

                      (3)  Likely storms will start

II. Cause of thunderstorms

    A. Lightning

          1. Spark caused by electricity in a thunderhead                         discharges

          2. Can jump from 1 cloud to another

          3. Can go from cloud to ground

          4. Caused by moving air particles

             a. Gravity makes water particles go downward

             b. Updraft makes water particles go up

                      (1) Water particles rub against each other &       make electricity

         5. Can hurt people & animals

         6. Can start wildfires

    B. Thunder

          1. Cause of sound:

             a.   Bust of heat expands air

             b.   Burst of heat makes air expand

          2. Cause of severe winds

       a. Knock over heavy rains & cause floods

III. Tornadoes

    A. Formation

          1. Warm air moves upward into a thunderhead               creates low pressure

             a. low pressure air attracts air inward & upward

             b. low pressure air surrounded by higher                 pressure is called low pressure closure

             c. air flows into low air closure & starts to             rotate in a circle

                     (1) Warm air rises up from the center

             d. Tip of the funnel reaches the ground it                   becomes a tornado

    B. Purpose of Tornado

           1. Lifts up heavy objects

           2. Where tornadoes hits

              A. Tornado Alley

IV. Hurricanes

    A. What hurricanes are

          1. A whirling spiral of wind thundering across             Earth’s surface

         2. Wild storm

         3. Tropical storms turn into hurricanes when wind speed is more than 73 miles per hour

    B. Strength

          1. Not an ordinary storm

          2. Brings w/: driving rain & crashing thunderstorms

          3. Effects the ocean

    C. Interior

          1. eye-center of hurricane

          2. eye is overhead hurricane comes to an end

V. Floods

    A. Flood watch

          1. There is a chance that a river nearby might                                overflow

    B. Flash Flood

         1.  Suddenly floodwater rises within rain for                              several hours

         2. Often occur intense rainfall from                                                thunderstorms

          3. In valleys & canyon floodwater flows faster than flat ground

  1. The outline looks good! Is it finished? Are you going to add a lot more to this page, or would this be better as a link somewhere else? I’m not sure this is worth a whole page, but you guys might have plans for it that I don’t know about yet. Hmmmm.

  2. This is a test. This is only a test.

  3. I like the professional look of the new Voki! If it is easy to change, can you have her say more specifically what information the webiste provides? Looking good though!
